What will you get if you apply for a UK spouse visa from Pakistan?

#1 Pakistani nationals and people legally resident in Pakistan (“applicants”) are eligible to apply for a UK spouse visa to enter and live in the UK with their UK partner (the “sponsor”) for an initial period of 33 months.

Applicants will then be able to extend this visa by applying for an FLR M visa before the 33-month spouse visa expires.

Please note that this article only applies to applicants who are making a spouse visa application from outside the UK.

Applicants applying from inside the United Kingdom should instead read our FLR M visa guidance.

If the applicant (the person applying) does not hold any UK visas which were issued for longer than 6 months, they will have to make the application from outside the UK.

Furthermore, applicants in the UK on a visitor visa cannot apply from inside the UK but rather are expected to leave the UK and then apply from outside the UK.

This is the case even if the sponsor (the UK partner) helps by submitting the online application and supporting documents.

#2 Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British Citizenship can be obtained via the UK spouse visa route.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) can normally be obtained after living in the UK for 5 years on the spouse visa route (not including any time spent in the UK on a fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner).

However, if an applicant is granted leave on the 10-year route to settlement rather than the 5-year route, they will have to live in the UK with their partner for 10 years before obtaining Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Applicants are normally only granted leave on the 10-year route to settlement when the standard requirements are not met (such as the UK spouse visa financial requirement).

#3 A UK spouse visa will permit the applicant from Pakistan to work in the UK.

If an applicant holds a UK spouse visa, they will be entitled to work in the UK.

This is not the case with a UK fiance visa in 2024 however, which does not provide permission to work.

What is the UK spouse visa from Pakistan processing time in 2024?

The standard processing time for UK spouse visa applications from Pakistan is 2-3 months (on average).

The latest developments about processing times are available on our spouse visa UK processing times in 2024 article which is kept up to date.

When the priority service is available to applicants, it usually reduces the processing time to 6 weeks or 30 working days.

Is the spouse visa priority service available if we apply from Pakistan?

The priority service is normally available for UK spouse visa applicants from Pakistan. This includes applications that choose to attend the visa centres in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Mirpur.

What is the UK spouse visa cost/fee in Pakistan in 2024?

A UK spouse visa application from Pakistan costs 662,000 Pakistani Rupees. This figure is based on the conversion rate at the time of writing (1GBP/358.6 PKR) and the Home Office application fee of £1,846.

UK spouse visa applicants from Pakistan also must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). The IHS fee amounts to 1,113,453 PKR.  This figure is based on the conversion rate at the time of writing and the IHS fee of £3,105.

The amount an applicant must pay depends on the exchange rate at the time – as discussed in our UK spouse visa fees/costs in 2024 article. As a result, applicants will normally have to pay up to 5% more or less than the exchange rate listed on Google.

Another additional cost applicants may need to consider is paying for an immigration lawyer.

Our full legal representation fee is £2,250. This service is primarily offered by Ed Lowe and Matthew French (both of whom worked in the Home Office for many years). This is a comprehensive service which involves us helping you with your application from start to finish to ensure that you submit the best application possible.

Our £435 DIY Application Pack Service, on the other hand, is for partners who want to complete the application process themselves but would like some additional help.

How do we submit the supporting documents from Pakistan?

There are normally three different ways to submit supporting documents.

#1 Upload the documentation via the self-upload portal on the VFS website.

Supporting documents can usually be uploaded from an applicant’s home computer.

This can be done on the VFS website after:

  1. The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) has been paid; and
  2. The spouse visa UK fee in 2024 has been paid; and

#2 Post the documents to a specified address in the UK.

VFS has a scanning hub in the UK which allows applicants to post their supporting documentation to an address in Birmingham to be scanned. There is an additional fee for this service.

Documents can also be delivered in person to the scanning hub and two other VFS offices in London and Edinburgh.

#3 Submit the documents at the visa centre in Pakistan using a document scanning service.

This service involves a member of VFS staff scanning your documents for an additional fee.

What are the UK spouse visa requirements from Pakistan in 2024?

To meet the UK spouse visa requirements from Pakistan in 2024, applicants must:

requirement 1

The Relationship requirements

To summarise, the main relationship requirements that must be met are:

#1 The applicant and sponsor must be in a genuine and subsisting relationship.

The Home Office caseworker will look at the application and supporting documentation before making a subjective assessment on whether the relationship is genuine and subsisting or not.

Home Office caseworkers are instructed to consider cultural considerations when they assess the genuine and subsisting relationship requirement. We discuss this in further detail in our spouse visa requirements YouTube video (which is at the top of this page).

#2 The applicant must be married, be in a civil partnership or must have lived with someone for two years who is British, has settled status, has refugee leave or humanitarian protection, or has settled status under the EU settlement scheme.

Alternatively, the partner may be a person from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein with pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (& started living in the UK before 1 January 2021);

Please note that applicants who are engaged or are planning to enter into a civil partnership can apply for a UK fiancé visa or a proposed civil partnership visa if they intend for the ceremony to take place in the UK.

Applicants applying as a married or civil partner must show their marriage or civil partnership is lawfully recognised in the country in which the marriage or civil partnership took place.

It should be noted here that arranged marriages are normally accepted under the Immigration Rules – as long as the Home Office caseworker deems the applicant and sponsor to be in a genuine and subsisting relationship.

Unmarried partners who have cohabited for two years before submitting their application can find more information about the two years cohabitation requirement in our unmarried partner visa UK 2024 guidance.

#3 Any previous legally recognised relationships of either the applicant or sponsor must have broken down permanently unless the relationship falls within a small number of exceptions.

The Home Office are only primarily concerned about legally recognised relationships here.

#4 The applicant and sponsor must have met in person.

#5 The applicant and sponsor must intend to live together permanently in the UK.

#6 Both the applicant and sponsor must be aged 18 or over on the date the online application is submitted.

requirement 2

The Financial Requirement For UK Spouse Visa Applications Made From Pakistan in 2024

To summarise, applicants will need:

#1 To satisfy the level of financial requirement which applies to their application.

Most partners will need to show an income of at least £18,600 to satisfy the requirement (this is often referred to as the minimum income threshold).

However, as we discuss in our Spouse Visa UK Financial Requirements 2024 Guidance the minimum income threshold is set to increase incrementally to £29,000, £34,500 and £38,700.

We discuss in the above article when the £18,600, £29,000, £34,500 or £38,700 will apply.

If partners receive one of a list of permitted benefits, however, the adequate maintenance test applies instead of the minimum income threshold. More information about this can be found in our adequate maintenance guidance for 2024 which provides a step-by-step guide to meeting the requirement.

#2 The level of financial requirement can be satisfied only by relying on the permitted sources of income.

The permitted sources of income are:

  • Employment income from a non-specified limited company
  • Employment income from a specified limited company
  • Pension income
  • Cash savings (see our £16,000 – £62,500 spouse visa cash savings requirement in 2024 article)
  • Self-employment income as a sole trader, partner or franchise
  • Dividends or other income from investments, trust funds, bonds or stocks and shares (from a non-specified limited company)
  • Dividend income from a specified limited company
  • On-going payments from a structured legal settlement
  • On-going insurance payments
  • On-going royalty payments
  • Property rental income
  • Interest from savings
  • UK maternity allowance
  • Academic maintenance grants or stipends
  • Payments under the War Pensions Scheme
  • Payments under the Armed Forces Compensation scheme
  • Payments under the Armed Forces Attributable Benefits Scheme
  • Widowed Parent’s Allowance
  • Bereavement payment & allowance

“What income cannot be included in the financial requirement?”

i) Third-party sponsorship cannot generally be counted according to the Immigration Rules.

There are a few exceptions to this, which we discuss in our Appendix FM 1.7 financial requirement Guidance 2024 [FM-SE & 1.7].

ii) Please note applicants can only include benefit income towards the financial requirement if the adequate maintenance test applies.

We have a detailed article about the adequate maintenance test here.

For more information about the financial requirement (which is the biggest cause of refusals), we cover this in-depth in our spouse visa financial requirements in 2024 article.

Tuberculosis (TB) Test Requirements For UK Spouse Visa Applications Made From Pakistan

Applicants who are living in Pakistan or have lived in Pakistan in the 6 months before submitting the application will normally need to provide a Tuberculosis TB test certificate showing they do not have TB to be granted a UK spouse visa.

The TB test will be valid for 6 months only.

Please also note that only TB tests from clinics approved by the Home Office are accepted.

What is the Tuberculosis (TB) test fee/cost in Pakistan?

The Home Office webpage (linked below) states the current TB test fees in the various clinics in Pakistan.

How do I book a Tuberculosis (TB) test in Pakistan?

An applicant should contact one of these clinics only.

Applicants should also make it clear the test is for a UK visa application when contacting a clinic.

Requirement 4

The English Language Requirements For UK Spouse Visa Applications Made From Pakistan in 2024

Applicants from Pakistan can satisfy the English language requirement in several different ways.

These are the following:

#1 By also having a majority English-speaking nationality.

Pakistan is not on the list of majority English-speaking nationalities.

The nationalities on the list are Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, The British Overseas Territories, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK and the USA.

Applicants will only need a copy of the passport evidencing their nationality from one of these countries to satisfy the English language requirement.

#2 By sitting an English language test.

Applicants from Pakistan can meet the English language requirement by sitting a Secure English Language Test (SELT).

This is the most common option applicants from Pakistan take.

If an applicant to planning to take an English test they should be aware that:

i) They must book a test which is at least A1 level of the CEFR.

Our article “A1 English test for UK spouse visas in 2024” discusses the best A1 tests to take (& some tests applicants may want to avoid).

Please note, as discussed in our UK spouse visa English test requirements 2024 article, applicants can consider taking a test at either A2 or B1 level as these tests can normally be used to meet the English language requirement in later applications to extend leave to remain in the UK, for Indefinite Leave to Remain and for British citizenship.

In addition, the English test must be on the list of Home Office approved Secure English language tests in 2024.

For your convenience, the list of Home Office approved test centres in Pakistan is provided here from this link.

#3 By having a degree, Masters or PhD which was taught in English.

Applicants with a degree, Masters or PhD certificate from an educational institution (usually a university) in the UK can normally use their qualification to meet the English language requirement.

Applicants with a degree, Masters or PhD certificate from an educational institution in Pakistan or another country outside the UK which was taught in English will need to submit the certificate alongside documentation from ECCTIS (previously UK NARIC) stating:

  • The qualification was taught or researched in English at or above A1 level (if the qualification was not taught in an English-speaking country, not including Canada); and
  • The qualification meets or exceeds the recognised standard of a Bachelor’s degree or above in the UK.

The ECCTIS process includes paying fees and applicants often choose to sit an English language test as they find this more convenient and straightforward.

#4 By having a disability (a mental or physical condition) which prevents them from meeting the English language requirement or having exceptional circumstances.

This is discussed further in our List of Home Office Approved Secure English language tests (SELT) in 2024 article.

#5 By being aged 65 or over when the online application is submitted.

Such applicants will be exempt from the English language requirement.

requirement 5

The Adequate Accommodation Requirement

Applicants have to show they have adequate accommodation available for themselves and their family unit when the online application is submitted.

Please note – as discussed in part 3 of our 3-part free video series – the accommodation cannot be prospective.

Therefore, applicants have to submit evidence they have suitable accommodation already in place when the supporting documentation is submitted.

Please also note the accommodation also cannot be classed as ‘overcrowded’.

Requirement 6

The Suitability requirements

The suitability requirement will only affect a minority of spouse visa applicants from Pakistan but it is important to read the details of the requirement because it often must be met.

Under this requirement, an application will be refused if any of the following apply:

uk spouse visa suitability requirements Pakistan

Under this requirement, an application will normally be refused if any of the following apply:

other uk spouse visa suitability requirements from Pakistan

Please also be aware an application may be refused if the applicant has failed to pay litigation costs awarded to the Home Office or if there are outstanding NHS charges amounting to at least £500.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Can the applicant leave Pakistan whilst the application is processing?

Normally, yes. If the applicant opts for the ‘keep my passport’ service, they can leave Pakistan whilst the application is processing. Applicants who opted for the ‘keep my passport service’ will, however, need to return to Pakistan to submit and then subsequently collect their passport.

What date do the documents need to show that the requirements are met?

The general rule is that the documents that you submit must show that the requirements were met on the date that you submitted the online application by paying the Home Office fees. The date at which the applicant attends the visa centre in Pakistan is usually not relevant.

Can we book an appointment at the visa centre in Pakistan before submitting the online application?

No – you will only be able to book the appointment at the visa centre in Pakistan after you have submitted the online application.

What is the most common reason for spouse visa refusals?

The financial requirement is the most common reason for spouse and partner visa refusals. This is because showing that the minimum income threshold is met will not suffice alone. Rather, the financial documentation that you submit must also comply with numerous document specific Immigration Rules.
